they’re so self absorbed that when ever it comes to traditionally accepted (or begrudgingly expected) gift giving time (birthdays, im-politically-applogizing-for-when-i-made-sarcastic-light-of-your-naivety-in-failing-to-consider-an-obscure-food-item-as-a-defact0-staple-in-the-kitchen-of-any-self-respecting-foodist day) they rifle through their stores of spew and pick out a piece and think, “by god if someone wouldnt be so lucky to own this, a testament to my greatness, to my conquering of overpriced media, of my ability to saturate an agglomeration of atoms with such a density of smarm as to make fusion possible, nay probable!”  Then with baited breath they present it, and watch on with sickening longing for acceptance, for profound weakness is what defines them, that and body odor. Anyway, unrelatedly, moving-on, an inital foray into oil with a throwback to the pencil ways was gifted to a chap named Andy that I flunked out of UT EE with back in the day.

I was recently invited to show two pieces at the 2nd annual McAllen Arts Council Fine Arts Exhibition (thanks). Coincidentally I had stored away two new works in the hopes of building up a cache of pieces before a tidal wave of preoccupation repositioned that goal.

Presently more pressed for time than money I set these to the “not for sale but everybody has a price” range, and to my surprise and slight disappointment they both sold. Unfortunately the market has spoken and I will take that as a cue to escalate the stated worth of all my ventures. This school year has proven dismal for art making. These two pieces are the last pieces I did on paper from the fall semester of 2008.  They were my attempt to embark upon color exploration (i like to think/wish i am trendily/fadshionably color blind) but mostly promoted an interest in abandoning paper and its paper ways. I recently threw down on some and reconfirmed the distaste. In frame construction I anticipate skewing towards more sculptural if not structural presentations. The application centric mentality of engineering school seems to have beat a bit of the superfluous fancy out of my motives.

Past due update: The bureaucratic engine that is the city of McAllen has put a stop to my Interstitial Mode, mobile pedicab and gallery, pending insurance and subsequent licensure by them. The insurance has proven prohibitively expensive for my aims and thus the systems gnashers have crushed a few of my immediate dreams. Anybody want to buy a cobbled together pedicab? Ask for tito.

hardware

on my way home from the grocery store a shape caught my eye, and then another until i found the epicenter of this hardware windfall. so sayeth, ” the road giveth and the road taketh away,” indeed.

as you see your opportunity for a ride diminish into the darkness. Or maybe you should jump on the opportunity as soon as it should present itself. Tips are duly appreciated.

I had to redirect many of my resources in order to make this beast roadworthy in time for October artwalk. In the exhaustion I grew weary until I finally connected the lights. In the internally illuminated state one can be preoccupied with the glinting bits contrasting the enveloping darkness and be gleefully unaware of the of the idealization compromises.

For this debut the pedicab portion was paramount but the gallery integration is admittedly cobbled together. However, the works/installations chosen are from my past work relating to the chosen name for this pedicab/mobile-gallery venture: Interstitial Mode:

An effective artist’s statement explaining the correlations and indirect communications, here, but a scrappy sleuth can get a very effective idea by looking to the implemintations of the word interstitial.

The interstitial mode comes along. I regained some financial liquidity and purchased some Kee Lite aluminum pipe fittings to couple together the seating and gallery framework. At this point I think that I have missed the mark on my aim of a harmonious fusion of design, function, and aesthetics.

When inventiveness reaches a stalemate, marketers often resort to the superposition principle. In an effort to constantly produce something “new” and incite the frenzy amongst our consumer culture to fear residing behind the wavefront of innovation there is often an ill conceived multitool or combo product.

Say for instance, your company was founded by your great great grander who made a mean hat. In the good ‘ol days making a quality hat was enough to see the company grow and grow. Suddenly, contemporary times started and the company had to diversify. Soon fashion became a necessity and planned obsolescence folded into the production strategy because not only did it boost profits but the consumers hadn’t the attention span to demand quality anymore. But then, one day, your thinktanking-product-liners couldn’t come up with anything hot-n-new. So in a moment of desperation upon facing the newly appropriated holiday season (between Halloween and Thanksgiving, decreed to celebrate the softness of soft things) deadline, out comes the all new extra-soft hat-shirt. You say you would really enjoy a hoody with a fedora sewn atop and faux fir lined front pockets with a bonus secret mayonnaise pocket? Then have I got a product for you, you naughty latent marsupial…
